Disrespectful to get a 1st Air Cav insignia tattooed?

I want to get a tattoo to honor my father who was in the 1st Air Cav during Viet Nam. I want to base it out of the 1st Air Cav insignia because he himself has one tattooed on his forearm with the words "Viet Nam" in it. I am just afraid it would be disrespectful since I myself have never been in the Army. I think it's disrespectful to be a "poser" and claim that you were if you weren't and I'm afraid that this might be viewed by Vets like that. Are there any vets/current duty that wish to give an opinion? Your opinions are the only ones I really care about. My Idea is the 1st Air Cav insignia with his name going down the diagonal ribbon.
