In the anime shiki did natsuno save akira?

*SPOILERS* In the final part of episode 16 its shown that akira was about to die but in episode 17 they didnt show anything about it. Also i've been reading someplaces theres been some talk about natsuno and kaori as a couple of some sorts, whats that about is it just fan fiction or what
